Drink.Pee.Drink.Pee.Drink.Pee looks at the very personal environmental issues caused by flushing our pee down the toilet: harmful algae blooms in aquatic ecosystems and pee-derived pharmaceuticals in our drinking water. How do we deal with the fact that our planet’s water cycles through a closed system? How do we take control of fact that what's in our pee ends up in the water we drink?

The artists, Rebecca Bray and Britta Riley, adapt scientific breakthroughs for immediate use in the home or office. Big R & D labs must translate environmental breakthroughs into infrastructure-heavy mass solutions. However, those same breakthroughs can become basic processes that ordinary folks can carry out and further develop on their own. Riley and Bray focus on an environmental issue, find the breakthrough scientific research, seek expertise with their social network, translate big lab papers into a home lab manual, publish some instructions, and then open the project to community development.

Our installation was part of the Human Nature exhibition at Ars Electronica 2009 in Linz, Austria. We conducted a series of workshops, where people transformed their urine into fertilizer.

Urine to Fertilizer Public Reaction
On Monday, April 6th, at 7:00 we had a show at Terence Koh's gallery space (Asia Song Society or ASS) as the first installment in their new programming series, Expel. We created fertilizer from participants' urine as they drank beer and socialized. Many thanks to Allison, Liz, Alex and Terence for putting together a wonderful evening.

Both the installation and kits were also featured in ArtNews, at Etech, and on the Discovery Channel's Planet Green series. The kits are on exhibit at the Criteria exhibition and were on display at the Venice Biennale. |
